Interior designers employ human-centered approaches that take into account people’s physical, mental, and emotional demands in order to address modern living. Generating innovative methods for advancing health, safety, and well-being, modern interior design is progressively influenced by biophilia, which is a comprehensive approach to design. Interior design is by definition a broad field that includes many facets of our surroundings. Casework, furnishings, building materials, and finishes are all included in the field.
Biophilia is the idea that humans possess an innate tendency to seek connections with nature. In The Anatomy of Human Destructiveness (1973), German-born American psychoanalyst Erich Fromm coined the term biophilia, which means “the love of living things” in ancient Greek (philia = the love of / inclination towards). Fromm defined biophilia as “the passionate love of life and of all that is alive.” American scientist Edward O. Wilson coined the term “biophilia” (1984) to describe people’s propensity to focus on and identify with other living things, including nature.

Design in Details
Through design, elements of the natural world—including wood and stone—as well as features like water, vegetation, and natural light—are incorporated into constructed environments. Exposure to nature is made possible by promoting the use of natural systems and processes in design; this enhances health and wellness. Reduced blood pressure, elevated activity in our neural systems, decreased heart rate variability, and pulse rates are just a few of the potential advantages.
Our relationships with nature grew more distant over time as technology advanced alongside us. The 19th and 20th centuries brought about significant changes in the way humans interacted with the natural world. We were spending more and more time indoors, protected from the weather. Most people in today’s world go between their homes and places of employment, spending between 80 and 90 percent of their time indoors. as biophilia is embraced by interior designers.
